Gill unbeaten on 100 as dominant India powers to 484-run lead against England
in 2nd test
BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) --- Shubman Gill added a second-innings century to his
double hundred in the first innings as India moved into a utterly dominant
484-run lead against England at tea on Day 4 of the second test on Saturday.
The visitors were on 304-4 and surely heading toward a declaration, giving them
more than a day to bowl out England at Edgbaston to square the five-match
series at 1-1.
Gill made 269 in India's first-innings 587 and reached three figures again ---
for his eighth test hundred --- just before tea with a single into the leg
side. He was 100 not out and has broken India's record --- set by Sunil
Gavaskar against West Indies in 1971 (344 runs) --- for the most runs in a
single test match.
Gill became just the second Indian, after Gavaskar (124 and 220) in that
Windies match in '71, to score a double-hundred and a hundred in the same test.
The current England team captained by Ben Stokes relishes its big run chases,
but this one surely is beyond them and batting out for a draw seems to be the
only play now.
Ravindra Jadeja was 25 not out and in the middle with Gill, with India choosing
not to be too aggressive with its shot-making despite the clock ticking on this
test match.
Bat-tossing Pant
Rishabh Pant was the only batter out in the second session and it was an
extraordinary end to his 58-ball 63.
Attempting to pull offspinner Shoaib Bashir for six, Pant miscued his shot
while also letting go of his bat, which flew toward midwicket --- close to
England fielder Brydon Carse. Meanwhile, the ball looped high in the air and
into the deep on the offside where it was caught by Ben Duckett.
Carse collected the bat and returned it to Pant, who walked off to an ovation
after his 16th test fifty. It was the second time Pant released his bat making
a shot.
India began the day on 64-1 and first lost Karun Nair (26), who drove and edged
Carse to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.
Lokesh Rahul (55) then departed when he lost his middle stump to a seaming
delivery by pacer Josh Tongue and that brought Pant to the middle before lunch,
certainly livening things up.
England leads the series after winning at Headingley last week.
